Shirt Snatcher

I just saw this story on Aol and I had to post it on my blog. Here’s the story.

14-year-old Melissa Cook was attending the Australian Open final featuring Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Cook’s favorite player in the world, Djokovic, ending up winning the match against Nadal, which Djokovic considered to be “the greatest victory of his life.” As Djokovic finished accepting his trophy and was packing up his gear, he headed in the direction of Melissa to give her his sweaty shirt he was wearing during the all match long. Then, this happened.

Wow. A woman snatches it mid-air as it was clearly headed toward her. You can see a bit of Melissa’s reaction as the t-shirt was nabbed, which truly breaks my heart. Melissa told The Herald Sun, “I started crying because I couldn’t believe that something I truly believe he meant for me was taken by someone else.” I hope the woman who snatched the shirt is checking out this blog. Lady, It would be a nice gesture to give Melissa that shirt back… she is only 14-year-old.

This weekend, Mizzou has been buzzing about the arrival of the #1 recruit in the country, Dorial Green-Beckham. From fans and the community greeting him as he arrived to Columbia, to changing the famous M-I-Z / Z-O-U chant to M-I-Z / G-D-B at the Mizzou v. Texas Tech basketball game, Mizzou is pulling out all the stops to recruit him. I’m actually kind of jealous… I never got this reception when I pull off the MoX bus. And to be perfectly honest with you, I had no idea who he was until last week.

I first heard about Green-Beckham in my J2150 Lab as a question on my current events quiz. Mizzou head couch, Gary Pinkel, apparently traveled to see Green-Beckham in his hometown of Springfield via helicopter to try and recruit the star. If Gary Pinkel traveled by helicopter to see this kid, he must be doing something right.

So, I decided to research and learn more about him. Dorial Green-Beckham is the 6’6,” 220 pound wide receiver hailing from Springfield, Missouri. He played football at Hillcrest High School, getting 15 touchdown and gaining over 1,500 yards. USA Today named him a High School All-American in 2010 and 2011. Green-Beckham has been sought after by a lot schools but has narrowed his choices down 5 schools: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Texas, and the beautiful, University of Missouri at Columbia.

I just gave a sample his numbers, but if you look deep into his numbers, they are very impressive and Dorial would be a amazing addition to the Mizzou lineup. He has announced that he will make his decision on National Signing Day, which is February 1. I know all of Mizzou will be on the edge of their seats as he makes his decision in less than five days.

House Decide to Redraft SOPA; Postpone PIPA

After much protest over SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) , the House of Representatives have decided to redraft the SOPA bill and postpone the voting of PIPA. The two bills, which proposed to give the government the right to censor illegal or copyrighted material, could affect many popular social media sites, including YouTube, Tumblr and Facebook. This past Wednesday, online users rallied together to protest the two bills, encouraging others to sign online petitions for Congress. Many websites also joined in the protest by “blacking out” their sites, including Wikipedia, Reddit, Mozilla, even WordPress. According to Google Inc., the search engine collected over 7 million signatures for its online petition against the two bills. Many House members changed their stance on the bill after seeing Wednesday’s worldwide protest. The bills have not been completely killed, with talking to resume in the House in February.
